Main temple of Mantokuji

Mantokuji is a Buddhist temple of Shingon Buddhism which is one of major Japanese Buddhism.
It is located about 2 km south of Higashi-Obama station.
And it is about 600 meters northeast of Wakasa-hiko shrine.
It is unclear when this temple was founded, but there is a description about this temple in a literature of 1265.
The temple prospered from the 14th to the 16th century.
But it was destroyed by fire in the civil war in the 1570s.
After the foundation of Edo Government in 1603, this temple was rebuilt by the Lord of Obama Domain in 1677.

Amida Nyorai of Mantokuji

In the main temple on a raised area, there is a statue of Amida Nyorai (阿弥陀如来).
The height is about 1.4 meters, and it is thought that it was created in the 12th century.
This temple has a beautiful Japanese garden on a slope in the precincts.
The style of the garden is called "Karesansui", and there is no water (pond, stream) in the garden.

Azaleas bloom around May, and red autumn maple leaves are beautiful around November.
How to get here
Run for 2 km by rental bicycle or car from Higashi-Obama station.
Or, a route bus for Omi-Imazu runs from Obama station.
Get off at Wakasa-Kokubu stop. About 8 minutes from Obama station.
Then, about 1.4 km walk.
