Yokokan Garden [養浩館庭園]

Yokokan Garden is a beautiful Japanese garden located about 800 meters north of Fukui station.
And it is located about 400 meters northeast of Fukui Castle.

Both "o"s in "Yokokan" are pronounced long, so it is read as "Yôkôkan".

Since the early 17th century, Matsudaira Family became the feudal lord of Echizen area (north part of Fukui Prefecture).

First, the villa of Matsudaira Family was built in this place.
And the original garden of the villa was constructed after that.

Current form of the garden was completed around the 1690s.

The site is about 100 meters square and there is a large pond in the site.
And a villa "Yôkôkan" is by the pond.

The original building was destroyed by the air raid in 1945.
But it was rebuilt based on the careful research with old documents in 1982.

Fortunately, the garden keeps the original form relatively well.

It is unique as Japanese garden.
Because, no island is put in the pond and wide scenery is seen.
And the stones placed in the garden have various colors.

This garden has been ranked high in the Journal of Japanese Gardening, an American magazine.

Yokokan Garden

Fukui Castle (福井城)

Fukui Castle was located about 400 meters southwest of Yokokan Garden.

Now, the moats and stone walls remain and there are the buildings of the prefectural government and the prefectural police department.

The castle tower was completed around 1610, but it was destroyed by fire in 1669.
It is said that the castle tower was very big and about 37 meters tall.

By the way, an old well remains in the site.
It was named as "happy well".
"Happy" is "fuku" and "well" is "i" in Japanese. and the name became "Fukui".
