Kamo Aquarium is the aquarium located about 10 km west-northwest of JR Tsuruoka station.
It is near a small cape facing the Sea of Japan.
This aquarium is known for the display of jellyfish.
Over 50 kinds of jellyfish are displayed, and it is one of the most number of varieties in the world.
Therefore, the nickname of the aquarium is Kurage Dream Kan.
(kurage = jellyfish, kan = facility)

Osamu Shimomura (1928-2018) is a Japanese organic chemist and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008.
His notable achievements was the discovery and development of green fluorescent protein.
For the study, he used a lot of the jellyfish named Aequorea victoria.
Because this aquarium had been keeping the jellyfishes, it had come under the spotlight.
The aquarium is not very big.
But you can see thousands of jellyfishes in several water tanks.

By route bus, about 35 minutes from JR Tsuruoka station.
